SAMSUN ARCHAELOGY AND ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM

Samsun Archaeology and Ethnography Museum is situated in the city center, close to the governor’s office, in a spacious area. The museum was constructed between 1976 and 1981, and it showcases an impressive collection of artifacts from the Bronze Age, as well as from the Hittite, Hellenistic, Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. Among the exhibited pieces, visitors can admire sarcophagi, stelae, clay vessels, architectural masterpieces, and embossments.

The museum is divided into two sections: archaeology and ethnography. The archaeology section exhibits works dating from the Chalcolithic period to the Roman era, while the ethnography section showcases traditional Turkish costumes such as bindallı and pesgir, as well as coins, clock bags, manuscript Korans, knick-knacks, guns, kitchen utensils, rugs, and carpets.

Samsun Archaeology Ethnography museum consists of two halls. In the center of one of the halls, there is a remarkable mosaic from the Roman Emperor Alexander Severus period (222-235 BC). This original mosaic depicts different mythological figures, the famous Trojan War scene with Achilles and Thetis, portraits symbolizing the seasons, and geometrical and botanical motifs.

In addition to these exhibits, the Samsun Archaeology & Ethnographic Museum boasts the magnificent Amisos Treasure, displayed in a dedicated tomb room. This collection includes exceptionally unique and priceless items, such as a crown, gold, silver, bronze bracelets, necklaces, neckbands, and rings, all of which offer a glimpse into ancient times.

Today, the multicultural museum welcomes visitors from around the world. Once inside, you will be enchanted by the dreamy and magical atmosphere, and the amazing exhibits, works, and artifacts on display will leave you breathless.
