The Honorary Monument of Samsun, a symbol of victory and eternal power for the Turkish people, was erected by Vali Kazım Pasha in 1932 to honor the brave citizens of Samsun and the great leader of the Republic of Turkey, Atatürk. This magnificent monument was designed by the grand Austrian architect, Heinrich Krippel.
HISTORY
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk landed in Samsun to start the War of Independence and bestowed a great honor upon the people of Samsun. In gratitude, the citizens of Samsun desired to erect a monument in his honor, which has become one of the most important and valuable masterpieces in Turkey.
The pedestal of this marvelous masterpiece was first laid by Governor Kazım Pasha on May 19, 1927. Since no Turkish artists were available to construct this fascinating statue at the time, he reached out to the famous architect Heinrich Krippel to create the monument. The bronze monument was completed by Krippel in 1931 and was displayed to the public with an amazing ceremony in 1932.
ARCHITECTURE
The Honorary Monument of Samsun, with its pedestal, stands at a height of 8.85 meters. Atatürk is majestically displayed on a rearing horse, symbolizing the power, bravery, and determination of the Turkish people. With a regal expression on his face, he looks directly to the west with eyes full of resolution and victory. On both sides of the monument’s pedestal, there are inscriptions and depictions of people carrying ammunition and bullets, indicating a scene of war. This splendid sculpture is made of bronze.
LEGEND OF THE STATUE
According to the story, the monument was flawlessly completed, except for one section that was missing. The architect, Heinrich Krippel, offered a prize of a pocket full of gold to anyone who could find the missing part. Many people tried but failed, and nobody could reveal it. One day, a man came and discovered the secret space by noticing that there was no nail within the horseshoe, which was the deficient point. In the end, he was rewarded with the prize.
