Located in the center of Samsun, the famous Amisos Hill (also known as Samsun Hill) is a natural wonder that is considered a step towards paradise, and it dominates the entire city. The history of this marvelous hill, which is one of the most visited places by domestic and foreign tourists in Samsun, dates back to the 3rd century BC.
Although this natural archaeological site was uncovered in 1995, visitors can reach the hill by a cable car (telfer) that is 320 meters long. The cable car ride is an amazing experience, and visitors are enchanted by the unique landscape of Amisos Hill with its mystic and sincere atmosphere.
In addition to these features, the hill now includes tea houses, cafes, and restaurants, making it highly suitable for tourists to rest, read a book, reflect, or retire like monks.
Furthermore, this dreamy hill is also well-known for its tumulus, which was discovered by a treasure hunter years ago. However, the area was later protected by the government, and there are now two tumuli – the North Tumulus and the South Tumulus. According to excavations carried out between 2004 and 2005, it was confirmed that these tumuli, which reflect the Hellenistic Era, consist of the graves of noble people and the Pontus King Dynasty.
In addition to grave rooms, the wonderful tumulus also contains the Amisos treasure, which is now exhibited at the Samsun Archaeology Ethnographic Museum. Currently, this location is open to visitors.
This section comprises of three special tomb rooms located on the hill, which is 8 meters in height and 3 meters in diameter. The tumulus is 18 meters long, 2.25 meters in width, and 2.5 meters in height, with the walls of the rooms decorated with fake columns without plaster.
South Tumulus:
The South Tumulus is a graveyard with two rooms situated on the hill, which is 6 meters long, 2.5 meters in width, and 3 meters in height. Its walls, ceiling, and floors were covered with cream plaster.
Amisos Treasure and Tomb:
After conducting some research about Amisos Hill and its treasure, it was discovered that valuable pieces, materials, and graves were located in a hole within Amisos Hill. A tomb or graveyard had been established by carving the clumped rock plate. The tumulus’ floor, ceiling, and walls had been covered with plaster made from soil mixture consisting of lime and brick dust. The tomb is 5 and 5.5 meters in dimensions, and 2.30 meters in height. This tomb contains five graves, which were the family tomb of male and female noble or elite persons of the community.
Various treasures were found, including jewelry (death gifts), pots and pans, a crown, a necklace, earrings, a gold ring with a gem, gold buttons, gold bracelets with human and animal motifs, broken gold bracelets, a gold barrette, earthenware, and kerosene lamps of death bodies belonging to a prince, king, commander, queen, and princess of the Pontus Kingdom.
As a result, it is now said that this amazing, marvelous, fascinating, and breathtaking collection of the treasure in Samsun is the biggest and most unique masterpiece uncovered in Turkey after the treasure of Karun. It symbolizes the limitless wealth of money, gold, silver, petroleum, diamonds, emeralds, jewelry, goods, and property.
