ALADDIN MOSQUE

The renowned Aladdin Mosque, a grand masterpiece of the Seljuk Period, is the oldest and largest mosque in Konya. It is situated on the Aladdin Hill, which boasts a spectacular landscape. Constructed by the great architect Mehmet bin Havlan in 1556 and completed during the reign of Seljuk Sultan Aladdin Keykubat I, it is believed that this magnificent mosque was constructed in honor of him.

RENOVATIONS

Over the years, the brilliant mosque has undergone several renovations; according to archival records and inscriptions in the mosque, it was discovered that this marvelous structure was restored between 1889 and 1890, during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamit II. Later, at the beginning of the Republic Period and during World War II, the mosque was used as a storehouse and suffered damage from an earthquake. Subsequently, it was repaired once again.

Visitors are entranced by the marvelous architecture of this marvelous structure. When they step inside, they are captured by the unique and multi-cultural building. The mosque was built in an Islamic style and includes sections with 41 columns from the Byzantine and classic eras. Its irregular and distorted plan includes a wooden mimbar, mihrab adorned with faience mosaic, and a cupola, all covered by a flat roof and supported by 62 columns. It stands 86 meters wide and 57 meters tall. One of its most remarkable sections is the north side, with 21 beautiful little windows that create a mystical atmosphere. Visitors can also see the tombs of Sultans such as Mesut I, Kılıç Arslan, Rükneddin Suleiman II, Gıyaseddin Keyhüsref, Alaaddin Keykubad I, and Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev.
