IZMIR KADIFE KALE – VELVET CASTLE

Velvet Fortress, known as Kadifekale in Turkish, is situated on Mount Pagos, 155 metres above sea level and 3 kilometres away from downtown Izmir. From here, one can enjoy a spectacular view of the port and the wider city. It is believed to have been built in the 3rd century BC by one of Alexander the Great’s generals, after he was instructed to do so in a dream by pagan gods. Alexander’s intention was to rebuild Smyrna, which was located on Tepekule Hill, in order to compete with other prominent port cities of the time such as Ephesus, Pergamum and Rhodes. After the castle was built, Smyrna started to expand towards the gulf.

Smyrna became one of the most powerful port cities of Asia Minor after its second establishment, particularly during the Roman period. However, the Velvet Castle was severely damaged by Tamerlane’s troops in the Middle Ages, and its final destruction came in 1668 when a massive earthquake struck the castle and its beautiful temples. The only remaining elements visible today are the western walls and five towers in the southern part. The exterior has been completely destroyed. Recent research has revealed that the long and deep cistern, with its terracotta pipes, was used to store rainwater in winter and deliver it to homes on the hill. This cistern and water reservoir in the castle were the main source of the city’s water supply system.

KADIFEKALE IN IZMIR TURKEY

A research team from the University of Izmir has recently discovered a sacred tunnel connecting the Velvet Castle to the Agora. It is said that the tunnel was built during the Roman period to transport water, which still flows down from the fortress to the Agora. Some of the ruins around the castle have already been restored, making the area an attractive destination for visitors.
The castle is also home to a number of ancient artifacts, including artifacts from the Assyrian, Chaldean and Hittite civilizations, as well as a large number of Hellenistic sculptures and statues. The castle also contains the remains of a Byzantine church and a number of ancient tombs. In recent years, the castle has become a popular tourist destination and is now included on many guided tours of Izmir. Visitors can take in the breathtaking views of the city from the castle walls, explore the ruins, and learn about the history of this ancient site.
