Uchisar Kalesi, or Uchisar Castle is located in the village of Uchisar, between Nevsehir and Goreme roads. With its geostrategic position and commanding view from atop the hill, this magnificent fortress offers visitors a dreamy panorama of the area’s miraculous landscape. The castle’s splendid surroundings provide fantastic hues of red on Mt. Erciyes at sunset, serene and refreshing valleys, and a rainbow of colors created by the land and sky.
As the highest point and crown jewel of Cappadocia, Uchisar Castle covers a vast area. It takes about 120 steps to reach the summit of this glorious fortress.
Visitors to Uchisar Castle can also explore the souvenir shops, boutique hotels carved into the rocks, and other valuable masterpieces in the area, such as Pigeon Valley, Kaymaklı Underground City, Goreme Open Air Museum, and the famous Fairy Chimneys.
Today, Uchisar Fortress is well-known as a member of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985 and was also placed under preservation as a National Park in 1986.
Later on, due to its geopolitical position, Uchisar Kalesi became a main control center for trade routes like the Royal Road and Silk Road during the periods of the Persians and Seljuks.
During the Ottoman period, the castle was once again a main location for protection and maintenance. As a result, many homes were built around the castle. When there was an invasion from enemies, local people could easily escape to the fortress to protect themselves.
ARCHITECTURE
Uchisar Castle boasts an amazing and breathtaking architectural style. It features a cave with three special ways, a huge joint hall, and a guardian room. The road to the cave is covered with stones, and the castle also contains passages, although some of them were filled with rubble over time. Additionally, the castle includes secret tunnels with a honeycombed structure that were built by locals to hide from warriors. However, these tunnels are very narrow, which has led to many legends about their origins. One of these stories suggests that dwarfs once lived there and built the tunnels to their size.
Today, after undergoing many renovations, the castle is illuminated with LED lights, creating a perfect lighting system. When you gaze upon it, you feel transported to a magical place.
