Excavations have revealed Cappadocian tablets, trade agreements, receipts, wills, and marriage contracts from this period.
As far back as 334 BC, the Persians had divided the region into provinces known as Satraps and called the area Katpatuka, meaning “the land of beautiful horses”. During the Roman period in AD 17, provinces, trading and military routes, and urban centres and settlements were established. The arrival of Christianity in the Byzantine era saw the emergence of the first Christian communities in Cappadocia and the construction of many monasteries, churches, sanctuaries and other significant structures. To protect themselves from invaders from Mongolia and then from the Seljuks and Ottomans, the people built underground spaces.

As a result, Cappadocia today is a melting pot of many different ethnicities and cultures, reflecting its varied religious beliefs from the past.
