BURSA KOZA HAN – SILK MARKET IN BURSA

The Kozahan, located between the Bursa Grand Mosque and Orhan Mosque, was constructed by the renowned architect Abdul Ula Bin Pulat Sah in 1491 at the request of Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II. The purpose of this building was to serve as a foundation for historical works in Istanbul.

The Kozahan was once a market for the sale of pod (silkworm cocoons), and the silk fabrics produced from these cocoons played a key role in establishing Bursa as a textile center. The tradition of sericulture, the production of silk, has been practiced by the Turks for centuries and originated from Central Asia.

As a masterpiece of Bursa, the Kozahan embodies the heritage of the Ottoman Empire and is a rich source of history. It is also a place of natural beauty and grace, being a center of silk production. The Silk Market (Koza Han in Turkish) is a two-story structure with a rectangular courtyard, featuring a sadirvan (water-tank with a fountain) in its center. The 95 rooms in the Kozahan offer high-quality, inexpensive goods such as silk fabrics, scarves, shawls, clothing materials, art, dowry items, home textiles, underwear, silver, and other valuable souvenirs.

The second yard, called the “Dıs (Out) Koza Han,” is located to the east of the Kozahan and is accessible via a portal decorated with blue tiles. The yard is open to the Long Bazaar and has been referred to by several names in the past, including Cedid-I Evvel, Simseh Hani, Beylik Caravansary, Beylik Han, Cedid-I Amire, and New Caravansary.
