AMASYA TURKIYE

Amasya, known as the land of the princes (sultan’s sons), is one of the oldest settlements in Anatolia. With its significant cultural legacy, stunning natural beauty, and status as a great city, it is situated in the Central Black Sea Region, surrounded by the Yeşilırmak Valley and other well-known cities such as Samsun, Çorum, Yozgat, and Tokat. This remarkable city has served as the capital of several legendary kingdoms and has been home to many scholars, poets, and artists throughout history.

HISTORY

Through archaeological research and studies, it has been indicated that the history of Amasya dates back to the Chalcolithic Age, approximately 7500 years ago. This rich and ancient history has been shaped by various civilizations, including the Hittites, Phrygians, Pontus Empire, Rome (Byzantine), Seljuk, and Ottomans.

During the period of the Pontus Empire (333-26 BC), the exquisite “King Rock Tombs” were erected in honor of the deceased kings. These tombs, which have survived to the present day, are considered masterpieces of their time. During the Roman era (26 BC-395 AD), special water tunnels, castles, and bridges were constructed, and artifacts such as the Elmalı Mosaic (Apple Mosaic) can still be seen in the Amasya Museum.

Following the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, Amasya continued to thrive and develop, resulting in the construction of numerous mosques, tombs, mausoleums, madrasahs, fountains, and palaces. These structures are some of the main reasons why Amasya is considered a significant cultural center today.

During this period, Amasya also served as a training location for approximately twelve Shahzadahs (sultan’s sons), who were educated by Lalas or statesmen. As a result, Amasya is also famously known as “The Land of Princes”.
